Gaming Influence: Thoughts - Star Fox Direct 5.6.2026

Hello everyone,

Welcome to Gaming Influence, a reboot of the same name I created in WrestleCorp. However, I will not only share my thoughts on certain video games and video game series, but also on video game movies, anime, digital presentations, and more.

For this edition of Gaming Influence, I'll share my thoughts on the Star Fox Direct on May 6, 2026.

Anyway, let's get started!

For those who are wondering, what is Star Fox? Star Fox is a series of action games created by Shigeru Miyamoto and developed and published by Nintendo. Star Fox for Switch 2 is the next main installment of the Star Fox series.

With Nintendo just announcing the game ten minutes before the presentation began, did Nintendo do enough to satisfy the Star Fox fans as well as players who have never played the series before? Let's find out and discuss what they've shown.

They start with Shigeru Miyamoto introducing himself and talking about the success of the Super Mario Bros. Galaxy Movie, as well as thanking the fans for their support. He then mentioned that the movie introduced a character that is not from the Super Mario series, as he showed a clip of Fox McCloud from Star Fox being in the Super Mario Galaxy movie. He then announced a new game for Star Fox is coming out for Switch 2, titled Star Fox. He then went to Yoshiaki Koizumi to discuss more about the game. I can't believe we're getting a new Star Fox game, that's insane! I just wish they had announced this ahead of time, but the fact that Nintendo is trying to hype up Star Fox due to Fox McCloud being in the Super Mario Galaxy movie is a great thing. Loved this.

We then see Yoshiaki Koizumi, who introduced himself as the host of this presentation. He then announced that this game for Star Fox on Switch 2 will be a remake of Star Fox 64 with updated visuals. He then introduced a trailer for the game. Holy crap! This game looks amazing! Granted, I'm a bit disappointed that this is yet another reboot of Star Fox 64, but at the same time, with the popularity that Star Fox has gotten lately, with Fox McCloud being in the Super Mario Galaxy movie, and with the series being dormant for a decade, this was a wise decision to do this. Also, at first, I wasn't into the new character designs, but over time, they grew on me as they're going for a more realistic art style for the game, which I'm fine with, as it still looks incredible.

We then got introduced to the characters of Star Fox, including Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi, Slippy Toad, and Peppy Hare. Fox McCloud is the leader of Star Fox, Falco Lombardi is the ace pilot of Star Fox, Slippy Toad is the engineer of Team Star Fox, and Peppy Hare is the strategist of Team Star Fox. As usual, the core four of Team Star Fox are still in contact, and after a while, I'm digging the new character designs as they all fit well, and their voice actors are great as well. It's always great to see Team Star Fox back, and this was no different.

They then talked about the Arwing, which is a high-performance aerospace fighter that has lasers, charged shots, and bombs when it comes to attacks. In terms of the other features that the Arwing can do, they can also brake, boost, barrel roll, and somersault. They then introduced the Landmaster, which is an agile ground-assault vehicle. They also showcased the Blue-Marine, which is a modified exploratory submersible. Nice to see all of these vehicles again in this new game, as they all look great.

They then introduced the campaign, which is the single-player content of the game. They introduced the planets that Star Fox will explore in the campaign, including Corneria, Fichina, Solar, Zoness, Meteo, and Sector Y. The campaign will feature special missions that players must complete to progress through the story as well as boss battles. Depending on how the player does on the mission, it will take players to a different path through the campaign. Cutscenes are added to the campaign to learn more about the characters and the universe of Star Fox. They then showcased the level of difficulty, which includes easy, normal, and expert. In easy mode, the shield gauge will be held longer, and the lasers will be powered up throughout the mission, which could be beneficial for people who aren't good at rail shooters. Well, the campaign is what I expected, but I didn't expect them to add cutscenes, which is a huge deal here to give more insight into the characters and universe of Star Fox, and that's awesome.

They then showcased challenge mode, which is basically a mode where players can replay the planets, explore, and complete challenges that players wouldn't be able to discover in the campaign. Players can do these challenges in normal or expert mode, as they have their own unique challenges depending on the difficulty. This is something that I expected, and great to see here, as this would have a lot of replay ability, so nice to see this feature here.

They then introduced battle mode, which is a multiplayer mode where eight players can play at the same time, and it's a 4v4 dog fight between Team Star Fox and Team Star Wolf. The objective is to complete the most missions and defeat the most enemies within the time limit, and whichever team has the most points is the winning team. There are three stages for players to choose from, and each stage has its own type of challenges to complete. For Corneria, players must take out opponents and seize control of the zone around satellite towers. For Fichina, players must collect energy crystals while dodging meteorites. For Sector Y, retrieve cargo and take it to their base. Battle mode can be used for local or online play. This mode can also be used for GameShare and GameChat. Okay, now this is an awesome addition to the game by adding multiplayer, and these challenges seem to be a lot of fun to do with others, so I'm curious to see how it turns out overall.

They then showcased mouse targeting, where players can use the mouse function of the Joy-Cons to play the game. For co-op play, one Joy-Con can be used to be the pilot while the other Joy-Con can be used to be the gunner. We then get another trailer of the game to cap off everything that was shown with new footage. Man, I love how they're utilizing the mouse controls for this game, as it'll definitely be an interesting experience to use. Looking forward to trying it out to see how it plays using mouse controls.

We then went back to Yoshiaki Koizumi, who reviewed everything that was showcased during the presentation. He then announced that the game will be exclusive to Switch 2 and will be released on June 25, 2026. The game also features character avatars, which players can use these avatars when playing on GameChat. The game will also support the Nintendo 64 controller. He then went over the history of Star Fox on Nintendo as he thanked the fans for supporting Star Fox throughout the three decades that it launched. He then ended the presentation with a cutscene showcasing the prologue of Star Fox, which was awesome. Man, everything that they showcased here was awesome, and the fact that this game is coming out next month is the icing on the cake. Really hope this game does well so we can get a revival of the Star Fox series, but only time will tell. Regardless, looking forward to playing this next month.

Overall, this was a great presentation from Nintendo. Even though I'm a bit disappointed that the game is yet another remake of Star Fox 64, the fact that the game looks incredible, and they're adding more to it with the cutscenes, and multiplayer is awesome. With Star Fox getting a bit of a resurgence due to Fix McCloud being in the Super Mario Galaxy movie is a great thing, and I hope this game sells well so we can get more games from this series in the future. The only issue I had with this is that Nintendo announced this presentation ten minutes before it aired, but at the same time, it was a nice surprise too, so I can't complain too much. Either way, glad to see Star Fox back and can't wait to play this when it comes out on Switch 2 next month.
